Nobody's Darling
Responsible & proper Boston music teacher sells her music school & all valuable possessions to finance her search in the Southwest for her younger brother's murderer. She finds wanted gunslinger Hero, shoots him, & goes to jail for it. Hero bails her out & convinces her that he didn't kill her brother. Heroine hires Hero to track her brother. But tracker Hero also gets forcibly hired by blackmailing US marshall to find heroine's now-notorious brother. Traveling together in the Wild West brings them greater danger & increases their intimacy. But Hero doesn't see how they can have a future together due to their social status differences which gets magnified when it becomes clear that heroine is truly an English duke's granddaughter. This was a well-balanced Medeiros story. It had humor, some poignancy, family dynamics, personal sacrifice, danger, romance, & sex. Emotional involvement, sexual chemistry, & sex scenes were all good. Although the characters looked to be opposites, they really were very similar in their characters. Both Hero & heroine were survivors of childhood tragedies. They were kind, caring, & courageous people. They both hid their perceived weaknesses. Heroine tamped down her impulses by being a prim & proper spinster. Hero masked his caring by acting like a devil-may-care gunslinger.
