More than a Mistress
Heroine is working incognito as a seamstress for her survival b/c she's running from the law believing that she may have killed her earl cousin who tried to rape her. She loses her job after being late due to tending to injured duke Hero who got shot during a duel she interrupted. He hires her as his nurse for 3 weeks after she accuses him of losing her seamstress job. Getting to know each other in those weeks gradually progress into a mutual attraction which heroine tries to deflect by attempting to quit her employment with him. Hero offers her a position as his mistress instead & she agrees with some conditions. They get to know each other even more intimately & heroine was about to share her big secret re: murdering her cousin but a Bow Street Runner preceded her news by informing Hero 1st. Hero feels betrayed by her keeping her confidences after he laid bare his personal secrets & treats her with contempt. She leaves him & confronts her cousin's father who hired the Bow Street Runner to look for her. Hero reassesses things & realizes how badly he reacted to her big secret & tries to make amends by helping her with the case. Will that be enough for heroine to trust him again with herself?Good writing (characters had depth, historical details, dialogue) but lacked emotional excitement & variation that I prefer in my romance novels. Hero & heroine were not intensely into each other. They approach their romance, emotions, & circumstances in a logical & disciplined manner. Their romance developed very gradually through the story. Sexual chemistry unfolded slowly & lightly simmered. Love scenes were generalized & matched the logical manner of their romance.
Moderately recommended.
