Breakpoint (High Risk Series #4)
30-something former JAG lawyer is partnered with former Navy SEAL Hero who she interrogated previously during a controversial legal case re: his Navy SEAL team’s rescue effort. Their murder investigation of an ambitious female pilot on a Navy ship carrier stirs up danger among the persons involved. It also turns up the heat between Hero & heroine who have to be with each other 24/7. Will their affair only lasts as long as their investigation?I was not too thrilled with this Ross book. The sexual chemistry as good as it was became too drawn out because of their investigation. I had to wait until page 300 or so for them to finally have sex. The sex scenes weren’t even that great and I wished there were more. This book was overfilled with naval terminology, military info, & Ross’ political proselytizing (i.e., Wiccan religion, gays & females in the military). It got to be too much unnecessary info that I started skipping those informational & preaching parts.
Hero & heroine were both strong people who had successful military careers but now dealing with career & life adjustments as civilians. I wish the book focused more on their romance and characters instead of all the book fill-ins. I liked watching their r/s change from their hostile attraction of what seemed like opposite characters to a deeper attraction based on respect for each other & shared interests & characteristics. I found playboy Hero’s monogamous intentions toward heroine believable. They didn’t play around saying their “I love yous” since neither have said it or felt it for anybody else. Their future together bodes well.
The action-suspense part was predictable to an extent and the ones that were a mystery such as the suicide of one of the higher-ups involved were not answered sufficiently. Some parts like heroine’s pregnant sister’s escape & the capture of the villains were too contrived to be believable.
Partially recommended.
